Annotation:
Kind hearted Blanch lives with her mean mother and older sister. One day while fetching water she meets a strange old woman who shows her nothing but kindness in a strange world.

Personal reaction:
The Talking Eggs is a an African American folktale seemingly weaved from elements of the Cinderella tale.  Blanche must always do the chores and serve her mother and sister, as they hit her and belittle her. One hot day Blanche is sent to the water well to get cool water for her sister Rose. During the trip she meets an old mysterious woman needing a drink, she offers it to the woman and the magical story unfolds. Filled with whimsey and depth this story will be a launching point for social discussions. Older students will be entranced by Jerry Pinkney's award winning illustrations, while being enlivened and moved by  Robert D. San Souci retelling of this old tale.
